After it realised it was a little difficult to produce cars down from scratch, Google decided to use its efforts in autonomous cars development with the Waymo program. Not long since this announcement was issued, Waymo and FCA announced that production of 100 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans built to enable fully self-driving operations has been completed.

A recent report regarding the Open Automotive Alliance is indicating that the new joint-venture will unveil the Google Auto Link system at the I/O conference later this month. For now, details are limited, but our colleagues from Automotive News are indicating that the new system is not a standalone infotainment system. It will be a “projected” system that will enable users to control their Android gadgets through the infotainment system. For short, this new system is similar to Apple CarPlay.

Sebastian Thrun, the guy who played the most important role in developing Google’s driverless car has provided a series a new details regarding this interesting project that aims towards saving one million lives every year.

These details were offered during Thrun’s speech at this year’s TED Conference, where he said that Google’s autonomous driving technology has been successfully tested for 140,000 miles by Standford University. These tests ranged from navigating desert roads to driving on busy down town streets and journeys on the highways, and besides increasing safety, this driverless car technology is also about reducing traffic jams.
