Mercedes decided to take on BMW 1-Series and Audi A3 with the new generation A-Class, launched at this year Geneva Motor Show. Smart decision, judging by the number of orders registered since its official launch.

Even Dieter Zetsche, Mercedes CEO admits that the new A-Class is a real success. In fact, the premium compact car it’s the most successful in Mercedes history.

Zetsche said that Mercedes has taken more than 70,000 pre-orders in Western Europe alone. This means one car for every 10 people that attended pre-launch events.

But the Stuttgart-based manufacturer won’t be satisfied with just this performance. Mercedes also wants to regain the terrain lost in front of Audi and BMW in the small SUV segment. Mercedes plans on launching an SUV based on the MFA platform that underpins the A-Class.

“These are not excuses, and we will close the gap in the next five years,” Zetsche stated, reaffirming its wish to see the German brand leading the premium market before 2020.
