The same petrol engines found on the Legacy will be offered on the 2010 Subaru Outback plus the company says their flagship 3.6-litre boxer six-cylinder unit will also be available.

Subaru press release :

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the maker of Subaru automobiles, today announced the European premiere of the all-new Legacy and Outback at the 63rd International Motor Show (IAA), which will be held in Frankfurt am Main from September 17 through 27, 2009 (press days are September 15 and 16). FHI will hold a press conference at the Subaru booth at 14:30 September 15.

The new Legacy and Outback models evolved their specific vehicle performance, through the integration of brand values and the development of new technologies among which “Lineartronic”, a new CVT (continuously valuable transmission) developed as

Subaru’s new generation of automatic transmission; a new chassis with cradle engine mounting system; a revamped packaging providing new standards of comfort to all passengers and larger interior spaces. In addition, SUBARU BOXER DIESEL, which was launched last year as the world first boxer diesel engine for mass-production passenger vehicle, is available on both Legacy and Outback in the European markets. Except for petrol turbo models, all petrol engine models comply with EURO 5 regulations for enhanced environmental friendliness. The new models will go on sale in the late summer.

Subaru Legacy
In the 20 years following the introduction of the very first Legacy, Subaru has committed to continuously enhance both the sporty handling and the safety performance of the model. Significant improvements were made to the fifth-generation Legacy. Featuring Subaru’s core technology, “Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive (AWD)”, along with “Horizontally-Opposed (Boxer) engine”, the all-new Legacy had its superb driving performance further improved, along with vital environmental considerations. It received a larger and more refined interior space to provide unparalleled comfort to all passengers. Two body types are available; Sedan and Station Wagon, featuring 2.0-litre & 2.5-litre petrol engines, and 2.0-litre diesel turbo engine. (2.5-litre petrol turbo engine is for limited destinations only)

The new Legacy Sedan is 65 mm longer; the Station Wagon 55 mm longer than the previous models, while the wheelbase is expanded by 80 mm, allowing for greater rear legroom. 2.5-litre with Lineartronic models improves fuel economy by 5.9% for the Sedan and 6.9% for the Station Wagon, compared to the previous AT models.

Subaru Outback
Since its world debut in 1995 (Europe in 1996), the Outback, a pioneer of the “Crossover” concept, has been receiving high praise for the unique combination of passenger car’s superior handling performance and riding comfort and SUV’s versatile drivability, while utilising characteristics of the symmetrical AWD.

The fourth-generation new Outback has been further advanced, featuring the redesigned exterior to express greater presence. The renewed packaging provides a new comfort level, while retaining its traditional “Crossover” characteristics such as adequate ground clearance. On top of the 2.5-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel models, the flagship 3.6-litre boxer 6-cylinder model is available.
