Kiyoshi Fujiwara, Mazda’s head of research and development, has confirmed that their upcoming sports car concept will feature a rotary engine. Yuhuuu! Speaking to our colleagues from Autocar, the rotary engine was developed by SkyActiv engineers and will feature cutting edge technology.

More than that, Kiyoshi Fujiwara went on and said that the unit will be synonymous with the brand and "sometime in the future it will return and be called SkyActiv-R."

As you expect, the Mazda officials has declined to give a timeframe for a production model equipped with this rotary engine.

"Rotary engines have lots of issues and we need to solve each of them. It’s not just emissions, it’s performance as well, and making it easy to maintain", said Kiyoshi Fujiwara.
