An American automaker has the top-selling car in the world: the Ford Focus. Research firm R.L. Polk & Co. said that Ford sold 1,020,410 Focus models worldwide last year. The second place was taken by Toyota’s Corolla with sales of 872,774.

Focus did well in U.S. where about a quarter of the sales took place. In other terms, sales in U.S. went up by 40 percent last year, while in China deliveries rose by 51 percent.

Also, the Ford Fiesta was the best-selling subcompact car in the world with 723,130 units sold.

"Ford has been among the leaders in Europe for a long time and the Focus and the Fiesta have traditionally done well there," said Tom Libby, an analyst at Polk. “A resurgence in the U.S. with passenger cars has helped Ford too.”
