Opel will enlarge its engine range with a new petrol unit, the popular 1.6 liter turbo engine. The four-cylinder received the SIDI logo, which states for Spark Ignition Direct Injection, marks the renewal of the automaker's powertrains range.
The new engine offers CO2 emissions and fuel consumption 13% lower, compared to the previous enginec while peak torque and power have been increased up to 33%.
The unit will be offered along two power versions. The first choice will be a 1.6 litre eco turbo with 170 hp and 280 Nm peak torque. For those who want more power, Opel is offering a performance turbo variant with 200 hp and 300 Nm of torque.
Compared to its predecessor, the new SIDI Ecotec turbo delivers a claimed "remarkable improvement in elasticity", reducing the time for 80km/h to 120km/h fifth-gear acceleration by about 20%.
Production of the new 1.6 litre SIDI Ecotec Turbo engine, alongside the other new engine families, will be at the Szentgotthard plant in Hungary and will begin in late 2012.
The market launch of the new engine family, developed at Opel's base in Ruesselsheim, Germany, will begin in early 2013, with Cascada being the first model to house the new 1.6 SIDI.
