General Motors has introduced the new 2.8-liter Duramax turbodiesel engine for the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. The engine is developing 181 horsepower at 3.400 rpm and 500 Nm peak of torque at 2.000 rpm.

The unit is mated to a six speed automatic transmission and enables both models to tow up to 7,700 pounds (3,492 kg) for 2WD models and 7,600 pounds (3,447 kg) for 4WD versions.

According to General Motors, the new engine has a common-rail direct-injection fuel system and features forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods. It is also compatible with B20 bio-diesel.

The new 2.8 liter Duramax engine will be offered on the Colorado starting this fall on the LT and Z71 Crew Cab models and on the GMC Canyon SLE and SLT Crew Cab. The unit can be paired to the 2WD or to the 4WD versions of the models.
