Volvo is pursuing its vision of safety targeting that by 2020 no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car.
The latest technology introduced by the Swedish manufacturer is a new safety feature that locates collision-free escape routes.
Volvo engineers collaborated with academia, various institutions and industry and managed to create a system that gathers all the information of discrete sensors installed around the car. This centralized system is called Sensor Fusion and shares information between various technologies: cameras, radar, GPS, and lidar (measures distance to remote objects by analyzing reflected laser light).
The new Sensor Fusion uses software to identify collision-free escape routes in all traffic scenarios. The system analyses threats around the car and can even assist drivers with auto-braking and steering.
Volvo already built two prototypes that will test the technology.
