Volkswagen consolidates its presence on the Chinese market with the second generation Santana, unveiled today. The first generation, based on the second generation Passat and launched in 1982, now leaves the stage and makes room for a new generation, technologically advanced in every aspect.

The new Santana gets only two naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engines, part of the newly developed EA 211 family. The aluminium engines, with 16-valve technology and integration of the exhaust manifold in the cylinder head, claim to be very efficient.

Santana promises a 5.9 litres/100 km consumption out of the 1.4 litre 90 hp version.  The 1.6-litre has 110 hp and fuel consumption of 6.0l/100 km.

Standard or optional features include ABS, front, side and head airbags, stability control, air conditioning or automatic climate control, electric sliding sunroof, alloy wheels, parking sensors and leather upholstery. Chinese buyers will get the same Trendline, Comfortline and Highline trim levels offered in many other markets.

The new car will be built in China by Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive.
