Porsche has released preliminary info for the new generation 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S models.
The
automaker’s benchmark sports car is set to premiere at the 2011 IAA
Frankfurt Motor Show on September 13th and then will enter the European
market towards the end of 2011. In the U.S. the new 911 Carrera will be
sold starting from February 2012.
The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera
features the ‘usual’ unmistakable silhouette but with a series of
redesigned features mainly at the front and rear. The car maintains its
compact footprint even though its wheelbase is now 100 mm longer, while
the front and rear overhands are now shorter. Also, the new 911’s
roofline is now lower and the front track is wider in order to improve
stability.
The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera is powered by a
rear-mounted flat six cylinder 3.4-litre engine producing 350 HP while
the Carrera S version makes use of a 3.8-litre plant developing 400 HP.
Both versions use the PDK transmission and have 0 to 62 mph acceleration
times of 4.6 and 4.3 seconds respectively. Both these times can be
further improved to 4.4 seconds and 4.1 seconds with the optional Sport
Plus button on the Sport Chrono Pack.
Due to its all-new
lightweight body featuring aluminium-steel composite the 2012 Porsche
Carrera weights 45 Kg less than its predecessor while delivering greater
rigidity. The car continues to have a variably extending rear spoiler
while its chassis has been improved with a new rear axle and a new
electro-mechanical power steering in order to further perfect its
driving characteristics.
And this is not all – Porsche has also
made the 2012 911 Carrera and Carrera S faster around corners with the
Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) active roll stabilisation system,
plus the new models are now 16 percents more fuel efficient when
compared to the outgoing versions.
The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera
with the optional PDK transmission returns 34,4 mpg combined and emits
194 g of CO2 per Km (first Porsche sitting belor 200 g/Km of CO2) while
the PDK equipped 3.8-litre Carrera S achieves 32.4 mpg on average and
has CO2 emissions of 205 g/Km.
In the U.S. the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera price will start at 82,100 USD while the 911 Carrera S will cost 96,400 USD.
In
the UK the new generation 911 Carrera will be available from December
2011, with the 350 HP model priced from 71,449 GBP, and at 81,242 GBP
for the 400 HP version.
