Another concept unveiled by Daimler in Frankfurt today is the Mercedes B Class E CELL PLUS, the company’s first electric vehicle with Range Extender.

The car uses combines the 50 kW produced by a 1.0-litre turbo engine with an electric motor delivering 100 kW and a lithium-ion battery. The battery enables the Mercedes B Class E CELL PLUS to travel for up to 100 Km in pure electric mode while the 1.0-litre range extender could take the car on a 600 Km journey.

The conventional 1.0-litre engine acts as a generator at speeds below 60 Km/h and as a range extender at speeds over 60 Km/h, by charging the battery which will transfer its power to the front axle while working in parallel with the electric motor. The Mercedes B Class E CELL PLUS takes 11 seconds to reach 100 Km/h from a stand still, and can also reach a maximum speed of 150 Km/h.

As it is designed to travel for long distances the Mercedes B Class Concept E CELL PLUS is also addressing comfort and safety issues by featuring technologies like Attention Assis, Blind Spor and Lane Keep Assist, Active Parking Assist, Speed Limit Assist, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Brake Hold and Hill Hold function, Reversing camera and the Pre-Safe system which is a first for a vehicle in this class.
