The Italian supercar maker decided to unveiled the Ferrari 458 Spider ahead of its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
The car represents "the world’s first mid-rear engined berlinetta equipped with a retractable hard top" with power extracted from the same naturally aspirated, direct injection 4.5-litre V8 found in the hardtop version.
The Ferrari 458 Spider is also using the same dual cluth F1 style transmission as the 458 Italia, but according to the company, certain features like the accelerator pedal mapping and the damping of the multilink suspension have been re-tuned in order to assure maximum pleasure and sportiness when driving with the top down.
The folding hard top used by the Ferrari 458 Spider (which weights 25 less than a traditional folding soft top) is made from aluminium, and can be deployed in just 14 seconds. The rear section of the car has been designed to optimise the flow of air to the engine and the adjustable electric wind stop diffuses the air in the cockpit and enables normal conversion even at speeds of over 200 kmph.
The Ferrari 458 Spider price and market availability were not announced yet.
