The Bavarian automaker has officially unveiled the BMW i8 and i3 today, though numerous photos and video that describe the technology behind these green concepts, which will be seen in the flesh at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. 
Both the BMW i8 and the i3 make use of electrical engines but use different propulsion methods, which we will describe in separate articles.
Right now lets talk about the BMW i8 which is a plug-in hybrid featuring a 1.5-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder engine capable of delivering 220 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. The i8’s combustion engine is linked to an electric motor, and their combined power enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less then 5.0 seconds, while maintaining fuel consumption figures at only 3-litres per 100 Km.
When the BMW i8 does not run like a hybrid, and is only making use of its 1.5-litre turbo unit, the output raises at 7-litres per 100 Km.
Just like any other hybrid a lithium-ion battery is also part of the i8’s propulsion system, and in this case the pack has been positioned in such a way that it enables the car to have a perfect 50/50 weight distribution. 
The BMW i8 can recharge at any standard power outlet, and can cover up to 35 Km when using just electricity. Based on BM’s claims, the i8 is a car that concentrates on its driver which is practical enough to be used on a daily basis. Its LifeDrive architecture has been adapted to enhance performance and maximise efficiency, and the car can behave like a four-wheel-drive vehicle due to its engines which can operate both axles simultaneously.
