BMW’s 6 Series line-up has just gained a third member – the 6 Series Grand Coupe which is basically a four-door coupe aimed at competitors such as the Mercedes CLS and the Audi A7.
Inspired from the Gran Coupe Concept unveiled at the China Auto Show back in 2010, this new addition to the range combines "sporty driving pleasure, elegant design, exclusive interior ambience, travel comfort and practicality" in a package that measures 5,007 mm in length, 1,894 mm in width and 2,968 mm in height.
The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe’s boot has a capacity of 460 litres (1,265 litres with the rear seats folded) and in terms of design the car comes with the the typical 6-Series twin round headlights with three-dimensional light rings, optional adaptive LED headlights, a coupe-style roof line as well as L shape LED taillights and the ‘Gran Coupe’ lettering on the C-pillar.
The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe has also been designed to integrate a third braking light above the rear window while at the in interior the main differences from the Coupe and Convertible versions are the slightly higher seating position, the ‘comfort-oriented’ rear seat backreast angle and the new range of materials that have been used.
The engines available on the the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe will include a 320 hp (235 kW) 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line petrol for the 640i, a 313 HP (230 kW) 3.0-litre turbo diesel for the 640d and a 4.4-litre turbo V8 petrol rated at 450 HP (330 kW) for the 650i. All these power-plants will come linked to an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard.
In the USA the order books the new 6 Series Gran Coupe will open in mid-2012 however the diesel version will not be available on this market.
