The German car maker is updating its entry level model range by introducing the 2012 BMW 1 Series, officially unveiled through an extensive photo gallery and complete details and specs, during the weekend.
Built on the same platform as the next generation 3 Series, the 2012 BMW 1 Series F20 has gained in size, with a body that is 85 mm longer than the previous generation, a 30 mm longer wheelbase, 51 mm wider at the front and 72 mm wider at the rear, and with a luggage compartment that expanded from 330 to 360 litres (1,200 litres with the rear seats folded).
The automaker’s second generation 1 Series remains the only rear-wheel-driven hatch on the market, but this time BMW replaced the 6-cylinder engines with 4-cylinder powerplants using the TwinPower Turbo technology. As a result the new range is promising improved dynamics and efficiency, with the most eco friendly model expected to be the EfficientDynamics version, which will be powered by a 1.6-litre 116 HP engine producing just 99 grammes of CO2 per Km, and which will be launched later on.
At launch the 2012 BMW 1 Series will available with five motorisation choices, out of which two are petrols and three are diesels. The entry level 116i will extract its juices from a direct fuel injected 1.6-litre unit developing 136 HP and 220 Nm of torque, while the 118i will benefit from a little extra power, as it is rated at 170 HP and 250 Nm.
As far as the three diesel versions, these are all equipped with 2.0-litre turbocharged engines and are badges as the 116d, 118d and 120d with their respective outputs being 116 HP, 143 HP and 184 HP.
All 2012 BMW 1 Series come with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard, while a new 8-speed automatic is offered as an option.
In terms of design, the automaker’s new generation hatch, designed by Chief designer Adrian van Hooydonk maintains the shape of the outgoing model, but gains a new front facia, highlighted by large headlights and a more prominent grille. The rear end was also restyled, and from certain angles we are able to see the current generation Polo.
