Audi has unveiled during the Berlinale film festival in Germany an autonomous version of the A8 L W12. The car is described as another milestone on the path toward piloted driving and it was used to pick up actor Daniel Brühl and his girlfriend at their hotel and then drove them autonomously to the red carpet at the Berlinale Palast.

And this is a big thing! Good job Audi!

In order to complete the task, the A8 autonomous used lots of cameras and sensors to locate prominent architectural objects along the route. It also used the detailed map and this is how the route was developed. More than that, Audi managed to write the software to act as a professional chauffeur and the car was able to accelerate and brake smoothly.

At the end of the journey, Daniel Brühl was excited and remarked the car drove smoothly and everything was perfect.

“We have already proven that we can have piloted cars drive safely on a race track and on the expressway. At the Berlinale, we have now mastered a complex urban traffic situation with maximum ease", said  Dr. Ing. Stefan Knirsch, Audi Board Member for Technical Development.
