Volvo XC60 Plug in Hybrid Concept

Volvo will unveil the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit next week, but until that happens here is all you need to know about this SUV.

Described as combination between an electric car, a highly economical hybrid and a powerful high-performance car, the Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept can run on either gasoline or electricity by the push of a button and its powertrain comprises from a 4-cylinder  turbocharged gasoline engine from the forthcoming VEA (Volvo Environmental Architecture) engine family and an electric motor backed by a battery pack.

The gasoline engine produces 280 hp and 380 Nm (280 lb.-ft.) while the electric motor adds an extra 70 hp and 200 Nm (148 lb.-ft.). This means the Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid can output a total of 350 HP.

The car can operate in three modes : Pure - which means it uses only its electric motor, Hybrid - which is the standard setting and when both the gasoline and the electric motor are used to provide maximum efficiency, and Power - when the the gasoline unit and the electric motor are used for maximum performance.

In Pure mode the Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept can cover up to 35 miles (45 km) with zero emissions, in Hybrid mode it can cover 100 Km on just 2.3-litres of fuel (50 mpg US rating) with CO2 emissions of 53 g/Km and an operating range of 600 miles (960 Km), and in Power mode it can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds (0 to 100 Km/h in 6.1 seconds).  

Recharging the Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid's 12 kWh lithium-ion battery pack which is located under the floor of the load compartment, takes 3.5 hours at a 220V outlet, or 7.5 hours when 110V/12A current is used.  

The CX60 Plug-in Hybrid also comes with electric-four wheel drive that can be activated by pressing the AWD button and which distributes power between the gasoline-driven front wheels and the electrically driven rear axle.
