The German car maker has unveiled during the weekend the production version Volkswagen Up. This small city car measuring 3.54 m in length and 1.64 m in width is scheduled to premiere at the 2011 IAA in Frankfurt next month so here are some key details about it.

With power provided by a newly developed 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol rated at 60 HP or 75 HP, the Volkswagen Up features a front wheel  drive-train and depending on the engine, it can either return 55.6 US mpg (4.2-litres per 100 Km) or 54.7 US mpg (4.3-litres per 100 Km).

Both engines emit below 100 grammes of CO2 per Km, and according to the automaker a plant which will deliver 68 HP and will run on natural gas is also be added as an efficient method of propulsion. With this natural gas engine the car will only emit 82 grammes of CO2 per Km and will require 3.2-litres of fuel to cover 100 Km.

Inside its cabin the new Volkswagen Up can accommodate four adults, and 251-litres worth of luggage that can expand to 951-liters when the rear seat bench gets folded.

Available in three equipment grades ('take up!', 'move up!' and 'high up!')  the Volkswagen Up is also going be offered in two special edition versions 'up! black' and 'up!white'. The car comes with the City Emergency Braking System (a world's first in this class), a feature that is automatically activated at speeds below 18 mph and which activates the brakes in order to prevent or lessen the force in case of an impact.

Other features include the Personal Infotainment Device (PID) which basically means a touchscreen display which serves as navigation and infotainment system.

Sales across Europe are expected to begin in December, but the Volkswagen Up price is still unknown at this point.
