BMW has been building electric vehicles not since it first inaugurated the "i" range with the introduction of the i3. The German manufacturer experience with zero-emission vehicles dates back to the 70’s. BMW begun its research on electric vehicles in 1972, when it introduced the 1602e model, used at the Summer Olympic Games in Munchen.

To help us remember its first electric car, BMW unveiled a short movie, dedicated to the original 1602e.  Back then, the car featured a Bosch electric engine and a 12 volt battery with a total weight of 350 kilograms (771 pounds). It was enough for a range of about 60 kilometers (37 miles) between charges.
