BMW has broken its rear-wheel drive tradition with the introduction of the brand new Concept Active Tourer, ahead of its unveiling in Paris Motor Show. Described by its creator as the ”first in the premium compact segment to combine comfort and space functionality with dynamic performance and style”, the new concept is a key component for BMW growth in the small and compact car segment.

The design is dominated by a strong and sporty appearance, with a prominent grille, LED headlights, and an aggressive front fascia. Judging by its dimensions (4350 mm long, 1834 mm width, 1560 mm height and 2670 mm wheelbase) the car resembles with the MPV segment and wants to become a real rival for the well-known Mercedes B-Class.

Inside, the cabin incorporates traditional BMW design cues and comes nicely equipped with leather, laminated wood and orange accents. Not to be forgotten the 10.25 inch display and the evolution of current Head-Up Display technology.

The list is rounded by a full-length panoramic-roof, equipped with Suspended Particle Device, a technology that allows the driver to adjust how much light is let into the cabin.

Under the hood, the new Concept Active Tourer is in fact a plug-in hybrid which features a 3-cylinders 1.5-liter, new generation, TwinPower Turbo engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. The powertrain reaches a combined output of 190 horsepower.

This way, the concept is capable of reaching 100 km/h in just 8 seconds, returning a fuel combined economy of 2.5 liter/100 km. The car can travel on electric energy alone for almost 30 km and the CO2 emission will stop at only 60 g/km.
