The Bavarian automaker's fifth generation performance saloon, the 2012 BMW M5 has been officially unveiled, after a series of leaked photos has surfaced online earlier today.

We'll cut to chase and start telling you that the 2012 BMW M5 is powered by a 4.4-litre V8 engine enhanced by the M TwinPower Turbo package which means it features the Twin Scroll Twin Turbo technology, a cross-bank exhaust manifold and a high precision direct injection plus the VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control system.

Thanks to this engine the new M5 delivers 560 hp (412 kW) between 6,000 and 7,000 rpm and 680 Nm (502 lb-ft) of torque from 1,500 rpm and despite its turbochargers, BMW says there is no lag.

The 2012 BMW M5 rockets from nought to 62 mph (0 to 100 Km/h) in 4.4 seconds, (0 to 124 mph / 0 to 200 Km/h in 13 seconds) and can reach a top speed of 155 mph (250 Km/h) or 190 mph (305 Km/h with the M Driver's Package).

Even though it packs some serious performance, BMW's engineers have also managed to make the 2012 M5 compliant with the Euro 5 emission standards. In fact the new M5 returns 28.5 mpg (9.9-litres per 100 Km) and emits 232 grammes of CO2 per Km, figures that were achieved due to the fact that the car is also equipped with a Start Stop feature and uses Brake Energy Recuperation.

Also, apart from using a 7-speed Dual Clutch transmission which spins the rear wheels in a precise manner thanks to the electronically controlled multi-plate limited-slip differential, the 2012 BMW M5 is also equipped with steering wheel mounted shift paddles, an M specific gear selector and systems like Launch Control and Low Speed Assistance.

BMW says the 2012 M5 has a power to weight ratio of 3.3 Kg per HP which represents even more proof of what this new  "ultra-dynamic business saloon" will be capable of.

The 2012 BMW M5 price was not announced yet.
